Nestled on the serene shores of Kaslo Lake, high above the lush treetops in the heart of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, stands the remarkable Kokanee Glacier Alpine Cabin. This year, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this iconic backcountry haven, we pay tribute to the spirit of collaboration, dedication, and remembrance that brought it into existence. As we celebrate the cabin’s 20th anniversary, we invite you to read more about its remarkable journey and enduring legacy.

A Vision of Wilderness and Safety

In the late 1990s, a vision took shape to create a sanctuary for adventurers and raise awareness about avalanche risk. This vision materialized as the Kokanee Glacier Alpine Cabin, a project that epitomized the collaborative spirit of individuals, volunteer organizations, and private businesses across Canada.

The Building Process: A Monumental Task

The creation of Kokanee Glacier Alpine Cabin marked a momentous achievement, one that fills Hamill Creek with immense pride for its role in promoting safety. The timber frame, meticulously handcrafted within Hamill Creek’s workshop, undertook an extraordinary journey via helicopter to the remote Kokanee Glacier summit. There, Hamill Creek’s skilled team, using pulleys and sheer craftsmanship, erected the frame with remarkable precision, shielded by stress skin panels against the unforgiving mountain elements, completing the exterior before the winter’s arrival.

Inside the cabin, the dedication to excellence continued. Every detail, from custom-built bunk beds to electrical systems, aimed to provide visitors with comfort and shelter. The unwavering commitment of owner Dwight Smith and the entire Hamill Creek Timber Homes’ team shines through, ensuring the cabin stands as a testament to architectural innovation and the enduring spirit of the wilderness. Despite an array of challenges, this dedicated team triumphed, delivering a timeless cabin that embodies their passion and determination.
